SENIOR ASSOCIATE / PARTNER – WILLS AND ESTATE PLANNING

The role arises in the Wills and Estate Planning (“WEP”) team. The team is predominantly based out of our clients Cardiff headquarters but acts for their clients on a national basis and we do not see this role as necessarily being anchored geographically to Cardiff, particularly given our increased emphasis on hybrid working. The emphasis is on finding the right candidate, rather than geography.
The WEP team is part of the firm’s broader Private Wealth group which, in turn, sits within our Individual Client Services Division.
The successful candidate would join a team comprising:
- One partner
- One senior associate
- One associate
- Four paralegals
- One telephonist/admin support
The work the team undertakes encompasses the full spectrum of will writing/lifetime planning, from more straightforward will drafting to lifetime planning for HNW/UHNW clients with complex asset portfolios, overseas assets etc.
The team receives work from a diverse range of sources. It has for many years provided will writing services for several major clearing banks (including HNW and UHNW brands), building societies, life insurance providers and other financial institutions, on a national basis.
The team also provides will writing and lifetime planning advice for the employees of national and multi-national companies, including one of the big 4 accountancy firms.
Work is also undertaken for private individuals, including internal referrals, particularly from the firm’s corporate and commercial teams.
Heavy emphasis is placed in the team on harnessing technology to drive efficiencies and provide excellent customer service. The team offers its services via several different media, including on-line, telephone based and face to face services.
Private Wealth Group
The broader Private Wealth group also includes our Trusts and Estates Administration and Contested Wills Trusts and Estates teams which, between them is comprise of two partners, seventeen other lawyers and approximately forty paralegals.
These teams also undertake work for both individual private clients and the customers of financial institution clients, including, for example, undertaking estate administration on a fully outsourced basis for one of the major clearing banks.
The role and the opportunity
The current partner who will be remaining in the WEP team has for many years (and very successfully) focussed on the growth of the more commoditised end of the market, in particular acquiring new referrer clients and driving volume through them. This has resulted in an excellent portfolio of financial institution referrer clients with whom we enjoy very longstanding and healthy relationships. The intention is for that role to remain the same.
This particular opportunity arises to head up the other half of the WEP team, namely the part that deals with more complex will-writing and lifetime planning for HNW and UHNW individuals. This is an area that we believe has considerable potential, given the existing client portfolio within the team and the contacts that we have.
The role would undoubtedly involve working closely with the current partner in the team, to optimise the HNW and UHNW opportunities arising from our existing client base and contacts and securing further referrer clients. We see this as potentially a very good source of work.
In addition, we would also be looking for the successful candidate to diversify our existing referrer client portfolio, fully exploit our internal market and potentially bring with them a following of existing contacts and referrers. In particular, we would be looking for a candidate to grow our international and cross border case load. They would have the benefit of working, in particular, with a very experienced senior associate with considerable expertise and experience in this area and who would undoubtedly benefit from having an experienced colleague to drive growth and business development initiatives.
In short, we see this as an exciting opportunity for the right candidate, with excellent existing relationships already in place to help grow and develop a significant practice. The successful candidate will benefit from the reputation that the firm has in the market generally and have the full support of the partner heading the group (with whom they would work closely), a very ambitious and technically excellent group of partners and a pool of talented lawyers. They will also have full access to marketing resources and will be encouraged to be imaginative and innovative in respect of growing their practice and winning new work. They would also have the opportunity of working out of our clients Cardiff, City (Gresham St), Southampton and Plymouth offices and be able to work around those offices and from elsewhere, when required. We envisage heavy emphasis on servicing and growing our client portfolio in London and the South East, and our City office playing a significant role in this.
